White Hat SEO vs Black Hat SEO – SEO Tools and Tips

What’s the difference between White Hat SEO and Black Hat SEO?
What used to be white hat SEO is now black hat SEO. This happens in stages from time to time because the rules of the games change. The game changes because of a few reasons:

  • SEO is abused or overdone
  • When SEO results in things that don’t make sense for people, on the SERPS
  • And typically as a result of these two the search engines change their algorithm and black list sites if necessary that use what they deem more black hat practices as time moves along


So avoid white hat SEO altogether?
No. Just be careful and don’t do anything borderline. Search engines will always be keyword based so there will always be a degree of keyword gamesmanship because people won’t find your site unless you use words THEY use to try to find information they need, which your site may have.

The problem is like point #2 above when SERPS don’t deliver what people are looking for. Say you search for ice cream and land on a page about milk. Close, and the pages on milk probably won’t get penalized because milk is related to ice cream.

But say you search ice cream and get a site about tennis shoes. That’s when the tennis shoe site gets penalized, it may have used keywords not related at all to it’s site’s theme or content.

The biggest problem is when two seeming distinct keywords are related not by semantics but just because. Say you had a new shoe named ice cream shoe. People look for ice cream, get shoes, it’s legit but totally throws a monkey wrench in taxonomies and terms and keywords.

The only thing that helps is if they used ice cream shoes to search as the terms, but just ice cream alone may cause confusion and that’s where search engines must catch up to the concept of branding association or other types of associations.

SEO Keyword and Text or Banner Ad Relevancy Issues

Also, text and banner ads may also display ice cream on a shoe site or shoes on an ice cream site unless the search scientists figure this out and make it work better. Relevancy is sometimes tricky when it comes to search terms, and you can see why…
