What do you think is the best way to handle trolls on your blog?

Trolls are an unavoidable part of conversations on the Internet. They appear not only on blogs, but also on forums.

I can still remember when I used to participate on some Yahoo Groups. There were some really fascinating posters on those Yahoo Groups, but there were also the inevitable trollers. These are the people who are always trying to stir up trouble on Internet forums.

Back in the days when I first got on the Internet (late 1990s), I ran into a troll on a Yahoo Group. We got into a big argument, and it escalated. The troller was trolling for reactions, and I gave the troller precisely what he/she was after – a major reaction full of anger. The troller enjoyed getting under my skin and continued to attack. The troller started in on my friends on the Yahoo Groups and even started attacking other Yahoo Groups that I regularly participated in.

Soon, many posters were really ticked off about this troll and banded together to try and drive him/her off. They tried to ban the troll from their Groups, but he/she just kept on coming back. The troll even started posting nasty messages on their guestbooks and other interactive websites.

After enduring a tremendous amount of aggravation and frustration, I finally realized that the troll was feeding off our rage and anger. The way to deal with persistent trolls is to ignore them.

If you encounter negative posters on your blog, I believe you should first try diplomacy. Try to turn the conversation around to a more positive light.

If the poster continues with unfounded negativity, then the person should be warned off.
If that fails, then he or she should be ignored. A one-sided conversation is bad enough, but when it turns negative and the poster cannot be reasoned with, the best thing is to ignore them.

If the troll persists, then your last resort would be to ban them from your blog or forums and contact their Internet Service Provider. I really do not like to have to ban people from any of my websites, but when a troll will not stop with negative input, then you are forced to ban them.

Over to you, dear readers: Trolls are an inevitable part of conversing on the Internet. How do YOU think they should be dealt with? Have you ever encountered trolls on your blogs and Internet forums?
