Are Bloggers Just A Bunch of Narcissists Part 2

I believe everyone wants to feel good and be happy. I also believe that without any ego these two things cannot be achieved. I believe complete self-denial is not healthy, and people who practice it bury their desires down and this will only surface in a negative way later.

What needs to happen is honesty. We need to recognize our ego, the need for it, and the need to keep it in control and in the right proportion.

We should treat ourselves to an occasional ego “let loose” where we are allowed to be egotistical to feel good and have fun. We must not constantly be like this though or we become narcissists. We must curb ego at some point, and I say 80-20 it.

What We Say Is Important To Us…Go Figure

We all think and what we say is important. We all think our view is unique and that it probably should be the view held by others, but that is not necessarily correct. The way we see things is not how others do see it nor should they, necessarily.

Otherwise we make a mistake known as “mirror imaging” and even in the area of foreign policy this can make things go truly awry. Do others really see it like we do, as important, etc? Probably not…

We can’t assume people think or want all of the same things or in the same way as we do. We all think we’re right and have quite a degree of pride of authorship.

Part of the problem is often due to 2 things, as I see it:

Pride

In other words, we get in our own way, due to pride of authorship. We fall in love with our own thoughts, ideas, style, argument and perspective. We fail to entertain others when we should consider them, not form our vantage point but from theirs so we can truly see things from their view, as they see it, to truly gain understanding

If we do that too much we will be going down the dark path to being narcissists who think we can make the right choices and decisions for others. They want it like we want it or have it. Not necessarily the case.

You’re Special, But…

We fail to see others have a right to their own view and are just as apt to feel right as we do. Part of the problem is that we‘ve learned a lot of “you’re special” lecturing we’ve gotten at times, yet failed to hear the right conditions and caveats.

The Lesson From Star Wars

Consider the dark side in Star Wars the narcissist path. But notice that the other side of the Jedi was not entirely non-egotistical either. They just had to be careful not to let things control them and lead them down the wrong path.

All the Jedi had a slight degree of Ego. They served a cause higher than themselves but they did not totally deny themselves in doing so.

That was important, because being human means wanting something for ourselves, and we should not deny that nor have it be denied to us. To do so, as some movies falsely portray, is not the healthy way but the opposite extreme, and extremes are usually bad not good.

Such things usually cause unintended consequences, and things surface as a surprise due to suppression if it was not positively neutralized.

We All Deserve…

We should be like the Jedi, mostly non-egotistical, but on occasion egotistical when we deserve to be or need to be to get the job done or to feel good for our own health, happiness, freedom, space, peace of mind and self-worth.

We all deserve these things, It should not be that these things are for some at the expense of others, That’s UNJUST! We all deserve these things. Every one of us.

Ego can therefore be a reward at times. We must allow ourselves a degree of ego fame so we feel good. But we should not become too dependent on it or addicted to it or we will go to the 80-20 opposite extreme.

Believe It Or Not, This Also Applies to Blogging

So when we blog, we should be blogging at least 80% quality content in order to keep the ego and the junk down and the quality up.

Those who blog on pure ego are often using their audacity and the controversies they create as ways to market themselves for the sake of generating traffic and thus ad revenue. They may not necessarily be doing it for pure ego. They have other motives and their ego only is a show.

So in the end we must be careful to judge. We don’t know the motives for sure and we shouldn’t judge since we could spend more time bettering ourselves instead. In the end, just make sure your Blog balances the ego you flaunt in it with the quality of it’s content.

MLK Example So You Understand

Even Martin Luther King was not totally selfless, he had some ego and it actually gave him character and strength to lead the civil rights movement in a more selfless way. He found the right balance of the two and accomplished much.

That is what I‘m talking about here, Ego in the right balance and use the right way as the lesson. It boils down to content of character, as King said.

Applied to blogging, this principle regarding the right balance of ego should then result in better quality of our content. Make sense?
