Do Your Research:
I have found that the best way to spend your time when optimizing your website for the search engines is by doing keyword research. It is extremely important that you find out what customers are searching for when looking for your product and who is searching. Most people optimizing for the search engines don’t take enough time here and in the long run it is usually their downfall.

Where to Start:
The first thing you need to do is to ask yourself “What would I search for when looking for my product on a search engine?” Do a search and see what comes up. If you see some of your competitors it is a good sign that you are on the right track. Now take it a step further and see what your competitors are using for their terms. Look at their title tags, headers, and meta description. See what they are bolding and italicizing in their text. This will give you a very good idea of the search terms you need to target.

Finding More Targeted Terms:
The step above should have given you a good list of keywords, but it is most likely for high traffic terms. Remember I told you that the big money is in the low traffic terms that are highly targeted. Here is how to get a good list of these keywords. Use Overture’s free keyword suggestion tool and type in the keywords that you already have. Most likely overture will give you some other terms that you may not have thought of that are targeted to your product. Remember that no amount of hits a keyword receives is too small because just one visitor can turn into a sale and always ask yourself this, “If searching for my product would I type that keyword?” If your answer is no, don’t use it.
